The Power of Somatic Movement
I have just returned from a couple of days of seeing clients for private clinical somatic sessions. It has been 13 years for me now, since I jumped with both feet into the world of somatic movement and hands on clinical sessions and I continue to be amazed and inspired by the power of this work. The power of this work is that it calls on each of us to use our own innate intelligence to self-sense, self-adjust, self-regulate and ultimately to self-actualize.
Our practice may appear to focus on our body and our physical form and we use this as an entry into our first person experience, but it doesn't end there. When I started practicing somatic movements I quickly realized that this practice extended well beyond the physical and included all aspects of my being: physical, mental, and emotional. We are giant sensory organisms and these sensations are telling me where I have tension and where I feel freedom. I am collecting data and using that data to make choices based on what is important to me. What felt tight yesterday, may be free today and what was free yesterday may feel sticky today. Pema Chodron talks about the this as the "fundamental ambiguity of being human." The ongoing question for me is, "can I stay curious about the present moment? I invite you into this exploration - to discover in each moment the power of somatic movement and the somatic perspective.
